Hearing Support
For ages
If your child has a hearing loss or is Deaf, you can get support through Hearing Services.
Hearing Services staff work with Tasmanian children aged 0-18. They include Qualified Teachers of the Deaf and Auslan assistants.
Hearing Services offer home visits on request. They can also connect you with other families who share your experience.
If you are concerned about your child’s hearing and they are under 5 years, contact your local child health nurse or family GP. If your child is 5 or older, talk to your local GP.
Early Years
During the early years, Hearing Services will work with you and your child to support play and learning.
They can also help with:
- understanding the extra help your child might need
- tracking your child’s progress
- Hearing Australia and audiology appointments
- connecting with National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) providers
- access to Auslan and assistive technology.

School Aged Children
Hearing Services’ teachers will work with your school-aged child to make learning accessible.
They can:
- provide specialised teaching tailored for your child
- support teachers to adjust and develop learning plans
- help students access hearing technology
- provide support at Hearing Australia and audiology appointments
- provide Auslan Interpreting in schools
- adapt classrooms and other school areas where necessary
- help work with the NDIS and other services.
