The Breakfast Dilemma
Making Mornings Easier
Some mornings, getting children to eat breakfast before heading out the door can be a real challenge, especially with an early start. It’s okay if you can’t get your child up any earlier than you already do, but that doesn’t mean they have to miss breakfast altogether.
Here are some tips to make your mornings run a little smoother:
- Sit down to eat: While it might be tempting to feed your child in the car, it can pose a choking risk and make the eating experience less relaxing. Try to find a few minutes to sit down together, even if it’s just for a quick bite.
- Offer a snack: If there’s not enough time for a full sit-down breakfast, offer a small snack like a piece of fruit or a milk drink (e.g. plain milk or an apple). You can pack more food in their lunchbox or send breakfast for them to eat when they arrive at care. This way, they can eat when they’re hungry and not feel rushed.
- Talk to your childcare facility: Ask if your childcare facility offers breakfast or if you can send breakfast for your child to eat once they arrive. Ensure any food you send meets the service’s allergy-aware advice. For example, it might be best to save peanut butter toast for home.
- Food on the go: There are many convenient baby and kid foods now available in pouches or Tetra Paks (e.g. smoothies). These can be lifesavers during busy times but can be expensive if used regularly. Save them for when you need the convenience and offer other options when you have more time.
- Eat together when you can: On days when you have more time, sit down and enjoy breakfast as a family, even if it’s just on the weekend. It doesn’t have to be all family members or a special meal—just a moment to connect.
By incorporating these tips, you can help ensure your child starts their day with the nutrition they need, even on the busiest mornings. Remember, every family is different, so find what works best for you and your little ones.
