FAQs for families

Who can go to a CFLC?

You don’t need a referral to access a CFLC.
Families with children from birth to age five, and expectant parents, can access CFLCs in their local communities.
Each CFLC has a catchment area. Families can access a CFLC if the child, parent, or caregiver lives in the CFLC catchment area.

Why do CFLCs have catchment areas?

CFLCs have a strong focus on local communities and accessing services in local communities. This is sometimes called place-based service delivery.

By keeping a place-based focus, CFLCs can better support children and their families. See below to find a CFLC in your local community.

What if there isn’t a CFLC in my local community?

CFLCs are part of a range of early years services and supports available to families.

Early learning programs and services in your community may include:

  • Launching into Learning
  • Libraries Tasmania programs, such as Rock and Rhyme
  • Local playgroups
  • Child Health and Parenting Service

Explore the Great Start website to see what is available in your community.

What happens when I visit a CFLC?

CFLC staff will welcome you.

You will need to sign in – CFLC staff will help you with this.

After you sign in, you can:

  • play in the indoor or outdoor place spaces
  • enjoy a range of activities with your child
  • chat and play with other families
  • have a hot drink and chat with CFLC staff
  • get help and support for your child and/or family
  • attend an appointment with a service provider, including a Child Health and Parenting Service (CHAPS) nurse (booking required)
  • get referrals to services
  • sign up for a parenting program or training course
  • connect with your local school to support your child’s school readiness and transition to school.

On your first visit, you will be asked to complete a Contact Form – CFLC staff will help you with this.

What is a Contact Form?

On your first visit, you will be asked to fill-in a Contact Form for your child. CFLC staff can help you with this.

CFLCs collect information about your child to:

  • record their attendance and participation in CFLC programs and services
  • support the learning, health, and wellbeing of your child
  • support your child’s transition to school.

It also helps CFLCs to deliver programs and services that meet your family’s needs.
