I spy…3-dimensional shapes
For ages 6 – 8 years
Three-dimensional shapes are everywhere! Your child can hunt them out in your home. Find the shapes, score the points, then start again and beat your score! Exploring 3D shapes will help your child to sort, name and describe shapes.
What do I need?
- All you need is paper and pen
How do I do it?
- Challenge your child to find different 3-dimensional shapes around the house. The object doesn’t have to be perfect – an apple or orange is still a sphere!
- They score points for the different types of shape they find (see images below).
- Ask them to write the scores and the number of objects down as they go.
- Once they are happy with their score, they can make it harder. They can add in a time limit or try to get a better score. They can also search in different rooms of your house or backyard.
Spheres score 1 point. Find spheres in balls, marbles, fruit…
Cylinders score 2 points. Find cylinders in pasta, pipes, food packaging, toilet rolls, broom handles…
Cubes score 2 points. Find cubes in dice, wooden blocks, packaging, ice blocks, sugar cubes…
Triangular prisms score 3 points. Find triangular prisms in tents, roof spaces and Toblerone bars.
Square-based pyramids score 4 points. Find square-based pyramids in cheese graters and blocks of cheese.
No-one knows your child better than you. So, choose and/or adapt ideas here to best suit you and your child. Remember it’s the talking and time spent together that matters most.
