Spray bottle art

For ages 2 – 8 years

Have you seen what happens to chalk drawings (street art) on the footpath when it rains? It makes a new kind of art. It is also something you can recreate at home with spray bottles and some imagination!

It can be a bit messy but the colour will wash out of clothes. This is an excellent outdoor activity when the weather is good.

This activity helps kids learn about colour. They can also develop and strengthen the muscles in their fingers and hands.

What do I need?

  • Spray bottles (you can use old ones)
  • Paper
  • Food dye
  • Water

How do I do it?

  1. Fill the spray bottles with water and add food dye one drop at a time. Test the colour by spraying on some paper. Add more colour as needed and try combining drops of food dye to create new colours.
  2. Spread your paper on the ground, or on an outside table – somewhere that won’t be affected by the spray.
  3. Help your child to spray the paper using the different coloured sprays, choosing their own colours and patterns.
  4. Talk to them about the different colours they are creating. When their wonderful artworks are dry, they can have an exhibition and invite their family and friends!

No-one knows your child better than you.  So, choose and/or adapt ideas here to best suit you and your child. Remember it’s the talking and time spent together that matters most.
