Making music in the kitchen
For ages 6 months – 6 years
This is a great, fun, LOUD activity that lets your child break loose and explore their musical selves. But it’s not just about the music – children are thinking and exploring when they play with household items. They learn new words and start to understand counting and rhythm.
What do I need?
Choose anything you can find in the kitchen (that’s not breakable or sharp), that might be used to make music, such as:
- wooden, metal and plastic spoons
- plastic bowls
- pots
- chopsticks
- colander
- whisk
How do I do it?
- Place your musical items on the floor or table.
- Use the spoons or chopsticks as drumsticks and the bowls and pots as drums.
- Have fun with your child experimenting with the sounds you both make:
- different materials (wood, plastic, metal)
- different volumes (loud and soft)
- different speeds (fast and slow)
- Sing songs and play along with your new instruments!
No-one knows your child better than you. So, choose and/or adapt ideas here to best suit you and your child. Remember it’s the talking and time spent together that matters most.
