Making music in the kitchen

For ages 6 months – 6 years

This is a great, fun, LOUD activity that lets your child break loose and explore their musical selves. But it’s not just about the music – children are thinking and exploring when they play with household items. They learn new words and start to understand counting and rhythm.

 What do I need?

Choose anything you can find in the kitchen (that’s not breakable or sharp), that might be used to make music, such as:

  • wooden, metal and plastic spoons
  • plastic bowls
  • pots
  • chopsticks
  • colander
  • whisk

 How do I do it?

  1. Place your musical items on the floor or table.
  2. Use the spoons or chopsticks as drumsticks and the bowls and pots as drums.
  3. Have fun with your child experimenting with the sounds you both make:
  4. different materials (wood, plastic, metal)
  5. different volumes (loud and soft)
  6. different speeds (fast and slow)
  7. Sing songs and play along with your new instruments!

No-one knows your child better than you.  So, choose and/or adapt ideas here to best suit you and your child. Remember it’s the talking and time spent together that matters most.
